When I say the
word Pirate what
comes to mind?
Dressing like a Pirate for Halloween or a costume party?
Maybe one of your favorite sports teams' mascots are the Pirates or Buccaneers?
You could have a favorite Pirate that resonates within you. Jack Sparrow, Captain Flint, Charles Vane, Ann Bonny, Blackbeard.
I asked my friend Nero-scientist Justine Foo about Pirates' identity,
"It's the mythology. It's the lore of pirates. That's why that symbol is so potent. It's because of all the stories and the mythology that goes with it. Everybody has a shared understanding of what a pirate is."
My identity personally and professionally has been connected to the pirate archetype for most of my adulthood. No doubt inspired by my childhood fascination with Treasure Island and many hours day dreamin' up my Pirate adventures.
Years later, at a crossroads personally and professionally, I asked myself, in all honesty, was I now or was I ever a Pirate?
Now would be a good time to clarify my view of the Pirate archetype. I've built a belief in the Pirate persona that rises up when change is needed, and things need fixing. Sorry—I have a bit of Robinhood myth tied into my pirate mythology.
In that space, Pirates for Good was born…
In the winter of 2016
Armed with a newfound passion for proving my gut belief in the Pirate for Good archetype, I devoured books by Marcus Rediker, The Invisible Hook from Peter Lesson, and many others.
I started crafting a discovery, community-building model based on Pirates and a theme model called The Shared Ship.
That March, I made my first test run of the Shared Ship model during a pro bono project for the Australian Childhood Foundation. I was confident in my discoveries and, more importantly, had a happy client. I started weaving the Ship model practices into my personal adventures and my agency client work when appropriate.
2019 I walked the plank
I learned it's hard to be a part-time Pirate;
thinking like a Pirate pushes the norms, challenges what you think you know and what you value, and the status quo.
Not that you're asking for my advice, but I'll share this anyway. Don't let others tell you your worth. Believe in yourself. It doesn't matter if you're 30 or you're 60. You bring value to this world. You write your story.
I won't lie to you. There is a danger in embracing Pirate ways. But the reward can enrich your soul and the treasure you value.
I'm still sailing into the headwinds of lifes' adventures.
I committed myself to dive into the messiness of life and end each day feeling good about what I did that day.
If you're a dreamer, a seeker, a maker, a lost soul, a rebel, a pirate, I want Pirates for Good to be our buoy that we can grab hold of during the rough seas as we set sail on life's adventures.
PFG is not an agency. This is part of what I want to feel good about at the end of the day. That I’ve given more than I’ve got. Maybe I helped someone today that needed a nudge of courage, a little inspiration, and to think like a Pirate.
Let's start a mutiny!
Let’s Talk Pirate.
